What Sunshine for the Poor Is About
On a hot Sunday morning, Nathalie Sanchez, an unemployed hairdresser, sets out walking across the Causses plateau to look for a shepherd. The shepherd she finds has lost his flock. As the two walk and talk, their path crosses again and again that of a shepherd’s son turned outlaw, with a famous bounty hunter after him, and yet nobody can leave this empty plateau. The film builds the shape of a western in a bare countryside, with no action at all. The talk moves between ordinary conversation and threat, and nobody is in a hurry. Alain Guiraudie’s fifty eight minute French film is one of the director’s early works and was completed in 2001.
