What Survivor's Guide to Prison Is About
The documentary is built around the cases of two men, both convicted of murders they did not commit and both of whom spent years in prison. Through those two files the account looks at every stage of the American penal system: arrest, interrogation, the caseload of a defence lawyer, plea bargaining, sentencing and what happens inside. The format is deliberately set up as a guide: what to say and when, what not to sign. Matthew Cooke's film takes a side and does not hide it; its argument is that the system has grown itself rather than reduced crime. Susan Sarandon, Danny Trejo, Patricia Arquette and RZA lend their voices, which gives the documentary the air of a campaign. There is almost no opposing view; the reasoning of prosecutors and law enforcement is not separately heard. Against that, the case files and the figures it presents are heavy on their own. The film should be read as a piece of advocacy.
