What Sword of Desperation Is About
Three years ago Kanemi Sanzaemon killed Renko, the mistress of his lord. He was given an unexpectedly light sentence and returned to the clan after a single year. He came back to find his wife dead, and now lives with her niece, Satoo. Nobody will tell him why he was spared, and he knows there is a reason. Hideyuki Hirayama's 2010 film comes from a story by Shūhei Fujisawa. It belongs to the last wave of Edo period sword films: little fighting, a great deal of waiting, and a confrontation that ends in an instant when it comes. Kanemi has a technique he has kept to himself, and he can use it exactly once. Etsushi Toyokawa takes the lead.
