Taanakkaran

Tamizh's 2022 Tamil film is set at a police training school. New recruits begin a course lasting months, and the methods used turn quickly into humiliation and physical violence. The subject is how obedience is taught. The instructors treat it as a requirement of the job; the narrative shows how that order later plays out in the field and also takes up the caste division inside the institution. Vikram Prabhu leads. The narrative draws on real events and is set in a period at the end of the nineties. The violence is shown directly and the close offers no institutional resolution. Who it's for: those who follow Tamil social drama. Who it's not for: viewers for whom physical violence and humiliation would sit heavily; the film shows them at length.
