What Taboo Is About

Kyoto, 1865, the barracks of the sword unit known as the Shinsengumi. A young and very beautiful fighter joins: Sozaburo Kano. The desire he provokes among the men turns quickly into jealousy and then into deaths, and the commanders can see the order breaking without knowing what to do about it. Ōshima treats the desire not as a scandal but as a question of power inside a military unit. Takeshi Kitano plays one of the commanders. It was Ōshima's last film. Slow, cold and deliberately ambiguous.
