What Tales from the Hood Is About
Rusty Cundieff directed and co-wrote this with Darin Scott, hanging four nightmares on a frame story set in a funeral home where Clarence Williams III's mortician walks three dealers through his inventory. The segments take on murderous crooked cops, a battered child, a racist Southern senator played by Corbin Bernsen, and a gang member offered one chance at redemption. Horror is load-bearing here rather than decorative: each story uses the exaggeration the genre permits to make a real grievance impossible to look away from. Spike Lee produced, the budget sat around six million dollars, and the film is now treated as a founding text of Black horror with two sequels behind it. Who it is for: viewers who like anthologies with an argument. Who it is not for: anyone who wants their horror kept apolitical.
