What Tambourine, Drum Is About
A Russian mining town at the end of the nineties: a strike has brought everything to a halt, and corruption and fraud are taking root in the transition to a market economy. Yekaterina, forty five, lives in that world, works at the town library, and the only bright part of a lonely life is books, though she is squeezed hard enough to start selling the library’s own stock. A sailor passing through the town enters her life and leaves it, and after that the taut wire inside her snaps and she lets go of everything she had been holding.
