Tamizh Padam 2

C. S. Amudhan's 2018 Tamil film is a parody. A hard-line police officer tries to catch a dangerous crime boss, but the plot is not the real subject; the templates of Tamil cinema are. From the opening scene to the final fight the film goes after well-known films and star personas. The hero's impossible moves, slow-motion walks, song breaks and dialogue formulas are each taken up in turn. The joke density is high and some do not land. Most of the humour requires knowing Tamil cinema; when the reference is missed the scene falls flat. Shiva leads and keeps the tone deadpan. Who it's for: those who follow Tamil cinema and like parody. Who it's not for: viewers new to Tamil cinema; most of the jokes rest on reference and do not work on their own.
