Sadao Yamanaka's 1935 Japanese film follows a cheap-looking pot with a treasure map hidden inside it passing from hand to hand. The pot ends up with a child; Tange Sazen, the one-eyed, one-armed swordsman, has to look after the boy and turns from a famous tough into a family man. The film was sold as a swordplay picture but has almost no fighting; Yamanaka turns the genre into comedy and is really interested in daily life. Yamanaka made twenty-four films, of which only three survive in nearly complete form; he died in 1938 while serving as a soldier in China, at twenty-eight. Who it's for: viewers interested in Japanese classics and period comedy. Who it's not for: anyone wanting sword action, or troubled by the quality of an old print.
