What Tapas Is About

A small tapas bar in a working-class district on the edge of Barcelona, and the people around it. The owner's wife has left him and he is trying to run the place alone. An elderly woman is trying to find hashish to ease the pain of her gravely ill husband. A woman talks to someone she met online. And there is a Chinese cook who has just arrived, whom nobody can speak to. The film was directed by José Corbacho and Juan Cruz together, and the two of them shared the Goya for best new director in 2006; Elvira Mínguez took best supporting actress. It was shot in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, in a real neighbourhood. The telling is not after any large event; the stories brush against each other and none of them is fully resolved. María Galiana plays the elderly woman. The whole subject of the film is the neighbourhood itself.
