What Tears for Sale Is About
In the early 1930s, in a small Serbian village emptied of men by war and a long blood feud, two sisters grow up. Ognjenka and Mala Boginja decide to go to the city, kidnap men and bring life back to the village, and the lights of the metropolis undo the plan and them along with it. Uros Stojanovic’s film took two hundred shooting days and three years in post-production; it carries forty minutes of visual effects and used more than a hundred thousand metres of film, roughly five times the Serbian average. It won the Free Spirit Award at the Warsaw Film Festival in 2008 and the Ecran Fantastique award at Fantasia in Montreal in 2010.
