What Tell It to the Bees Is About
A doctor returning to a small Scottish town in the nineteen-fifties starts work as its only woman physician. After treating a boy's wound she meets his mother. A relationship begins between the two women and the town notices. The film runs the narrative through the boy's eyes, and the idea of telling secrets to the bees becomes the carrier of everything that cannot be said. Annabel Jankel directed, with Anna Paquin and Holliday Grainger. It is adapted from Fiona Shaw's novel. Before watching: the ending differs markedly from the novel's, and that change was criticised by some queer viewers. The film also contains an illegal abortion and scenes of violence.
