Thalavara

Akhil Anilkumar's 2025 Malayalam film follows Jyothish, mocked because of his vitiligo. After years of hiding, a dream of acting and a relationship draw him out, but rejection and open cruelty test him again. What is interesting is that the film does not look for its resolution in treatment or in being accepted. Jyothish's gain is not fame but ceasing to take other people's looks as the measure of his worth. That is a different ending from most films on the subject. Arjun Ashokan leads. The narrative contains several passages that come close to melodrama and steers the emotion openly; as a first feature its formal ambition is limited. Who it's for: those interested in contemporary Malayalam drama and in exclusion based on appearance. Who it's not for: viewers who want emotional distance; the film often tells you what to feel.
