What The 4th Man Is About
Gerard Reve, an alcoholic writer who keeps seeing visions of death, sets off to give a talk at a literary club, and the handsome man he notices at Amsterdam station stays in his mind. On arrival he meets Christine, the club’s treasurer, and they spend a night together. In the morning he sees a photograph of her boyfriend and recognises the man from the station. While manoeuvring to get Herman to the house, he discovers that all three of Christine’s husbands died in accidents, and starts wondering who the fourth man will be. An uneasy thriller from Paul Verhoeven’s Dutch period, saturated with religious imagery.
