What The Andromeda Strain Is About
Robert Wise's 1971 film opens with almost everyone in a town dying after a satellite comes down. A team of scientists is sealed into an underground laboratory. They have to work out the organism. The film draws its tension entirely from method; the narrative shows the laboratory steps one by one. It is adapted from a Michael Crichton novel. Split screen is used heavily. It counts as a cold example of the science fiction of its period. Who it's for: those who like procedural science fiction. Who it's not for: viewers expecting action; the film is almost entirely talk and experiment.
