What The Beast Is Loose Is About
This French crime film directed by Maurice Labro opens with a gangster who has retired. When documents of considerable importance go missing, Paul Lamiani is asked to come back to work, since the papers are thought to be in the hands of an old friend of his. That means working against his own circle. The whole balance changes when his son is kidnapped, and a matter of duty becomes a matter of fatherhood. The film moves in the calm, talkative manner of French crime pictures of the period, leaning less on action than on a threat that stays suspended in the air. Lino Ventura's weight sits exactly in the middle of the part, with Paul Frankeur and Estella Blain in support.
