What The Big City Is About

When a family's income in Calcutta stops being enough, Arati takes a job against the wishes of her husband and his parents, going door to door selling sewing machines. She quickly becomes the best salesperson in the firm and the balance at home breaks, because her husband loses his job. Satyajit Ray refuses to leave the matter at whether a wife should work; Arati is learning at work to like herself. The weight of the film gathers in the decision she makes when her Anglo-Indian friend Edith is treated unjustly. Ray won best director at Berlin in 1964 for it.
