What The Boy and the Wind Is About
Carlos Hugo Christensen's 1967 Brazilian film follows a young engineer on holiday in a town in Minas Gerais known for its winds and the closeness he forms with a local boy who has a strange relationship with the wind. When the boy disappears, the town accuses the engineer of murder, and the trial in effect becomes a trial of the nature of their bond. Adapted from a story by Aníbal Machado, the film is among the earliest works in Brazilian cinema to treat homosexual desire, and it does so under the military dictatorship in an entirely indirect language. The wind here is both a natural event and the form of what cannot be said. The telling is slow and poetic, with plot in second place. Who it's for: viewers interested in the history of Brazilian cinema and early queer narratives. Who it's not for: anyone wanting direct storytelling, or who dislikes ambiguous endings.
