What The Bricklayers Is About
A night watchman, don Jesús, is found beaten to death on a building site. As the investigation goes on it turns out everyone had a reason: the foremen, the labourers, the contractor, even the men running the inquiry. Flashbacks open up life on the site, and what emerges is less who did what to whom than how people live there. Jorge Fons adapted Vicente Leñero's novel and shot it hand-held, in the heavy slang of Mexico City building workers. The subject is corruption, neglect and the methods of the police rather than the murder itself. Ignacio López Tarso plays the watchman. It won a Silver Bear at Berlin in 1977.
