What The Burdened Is About
In the middle of the civil war in Yemen, Ahmed and Isra, who live in Aden, have lost their jobs and can barely keep their three children. When Isra learns that she is pregnant again, the two of them decide they cannot support another child and consider ending the pregnancy. But even talking about it is hard; the law and the people around them are closed to it, and the decision opens a wound between them as well. The film starts from a true story and gives the choice not as a moral argument but as a reckoning forced by war and poverty. Amr Gamal’s ninety one minute film became the first Yemeni film shown at the Berlinale; it was completed in 2023.
