A woman known only as Elle and her husband, a wealthy industrialist, are not on good terms. She enjoys the way he answers her every whim but wonders whether he actually loves her; he torments himself imagining rivals who do not exist. One morning she wakes from a nightmare in which a man in a series of disguises pursues her, and he turns out to be the famous Detective Z, whose memoirs she has been reading. After a quarrel about leaving Paris for good and moving to the country, the husband goes to an agency and hires, of all people, Detective Z.
