The Carer

Sir Michael Gifford was a great stage actor and now lives at home with an incurable illness. All he wants is for nobody to interfere with him. His daughter and his assistant find someone to look after him: Dorottya, a young woman who has come from Hungary and wants to act on the English stage. He does not want her and she does not leave. Both of them have a plan and neither says so. Brian Cox plays Gifford and carries the part without asking for pity; the man is ill but also rude, arrogant and funny. Dorottya knows her Shakespeare and uses it. János Edelényi's film does not turn the care relationship into a story of sacrifice; both sides want something from the other and the film shows that without embarrassment. Emilia Fox and Anna Chancellor are in the cast. Roger Moore appears as himself in a short scene.
