What The Caretaker Is About

Aston, a quiet and withdrawn man, lives alone in a cluttered top floor room of a small abandoned house in a poor district of London. He takes in Davies, an old homeless man who has been thrown out of his job at a cafe, and after a while offers him the post of caretaker of the house. But Aston’s brother Mick corners the man whenever his brother is out, takes back what has been promised and plays with him. The relation of power among the three men keeps changing hands; every word about who will stay in the house is undone by the next one. The film was adapted by Harold Pinter from his own play. Alan Bates, Donald Pleasence and Robert Shaw appear in Clive Donner’s hundred and five minute British film.
