What The Clone Returns Home Is About
Kohei, an astronaut, dies on a mission and is legally brought back as a clone. What the scientists expected does not happen: the clone who wakes remembers not the present but his childhood, his memory locked on the day his twin brother drowned saving him. When he finds his own former body he takes it for his brother's, hoists it onto his back, and sets out for the home town where he lived with his mother. Kanji Nakajima turns science fiction into a story about grief. There are almost no effects; there are empty landscapes, long silences and the same childhood images returning. It asks where identity actually sits: is it the same person living in the same body, or only the memories being carried? It declines to answer.
