What The Count of Monte Cristo Is About
Robert Vernay had already filmed Dumas in black and white in 1943, and came back to the same novel eleven years later in colour, with Jean Marais as Edmond Dantès. The familiar chain of events, the false accusation, the years in the Château d'If, the treasure and the slow construction of a new identity, is given room here rather than compressed. The three hour running time is explained by the fact that it was never released as a single film: audiences saw it in two parts, La Trahison and La Vengeance, two weeks apart. It was a French and Italian co-production.
