What The Crossing Is About
Bai Xue's 2018 Chinese film follows Peipei, sixteen, living in Shenzhen and studying in Hong Kong. She crosses the border every day; while saving for a dream of seeing snow in Japan, she joins a group smuggling phones using her student identity. The film's strength is framing the smuggling not as a crime story but as a search for belonging: Peipei belongs fully to neither city, and this in-between space at the border gives her a place for the first time. It is Bai Xue's first film and is formally very restrained. Huang Yao's performance carries it. The pace is slow and the ending left open. Who it's for: viewers who like Chinese independent cinema and stories of adolescence. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a thriller, or who dislikes open endings.
