What The Cupboard Was Bare Is About
The wealthy aunt of Alfred Puc, a timid tax collector in Paris, dies while travelling in a removal van. Not wanting to deal with the police, the driver hides the body inside a cupboard and then sends word; but the van is stolen. The body is needed for the inheritance, so Alfred takes to the city to find the missing van and cupboard, and his path crosses the criminal world. He finds the cupboard, then loses it again. Fernandel appears in Carlo Rim’s ninety minute French comedy, whose humour is aimed not at death but at bureaucracy, at the paperwork an inheritance demands and at everyone who profits from it. It was completed in 1948.
