What The Custodian Is About

Ruben is bodyguard to Artemio, Argentina's Minister of Planning. The job is to be the man's shadow: if the minister gets out of the car, Ruben gets out; if he turns left, Ruben turns left; if he takes the family to the country club for the weekend, Ruben goes too. Over years that shadow work eats the person doing it, and Ruben decides to make some connection of his own. Rodrigo Moreno builds the film with an almost silent patience, so the tension collects in a face rather than in events. Julio Chavez carries it. Berlin gave it the Alfred Bauer Prize in 2006.
