What The Dead Season Is About
The Soviet agent Ladeynikov learns that a former German war criminal, Doctor Hass, is working at one of the pharmaceutical centres in a small spa town. The man is close to finishing a deadly chemical gas he began developing during the Second World War by experimenting on prisoners of war. Because Ladeynikov does not know his face, Soviet intelligence brings in an actor, Ivan Savushkin, who escaped during the war from the camp where Hass was testing his gas. The two of them must find him and stop him before the weapon is used. The film gives espionage as unglamorous and slow work. Donatas Banionis plays the lead in Savva Kulish’s hundred and thirty eight minute Soviet film, completed in 1968.
