What The Depot of the Dead Is About
A timber hauling depot in the mountains of southeastern Poland; the people who arrive there are those who have fallen off the edge of life, along with former prisoners, and nobody wants to stay because there is neither a road nor any order. The arrival of a new boss and his wife sets off the violence that has been collecting. The source is Marek Hłasko’s short novel Następny do raju; the book did not get past Polish censorship and was published in France in 1958. Czesław Petelski directed and Kurt Weber shot it. It opened on 10 August 1959. The story is set in the Bieszczady mountains, but the filming was done in the Sudetes around Lądek-Zdrój, so the mountains on screen are a different range altogether.
