The Devils

Joseph and Chloé are brother and sister, living on the road in the south of France and running from every institution that tries to hold them. Chloé does not speak, cannot bear to be touched, and wants only to find a house from their childhood; Joseph has made finding it his own mission. What keeps the two of them together is less love than the fact that there is nobody outside. The film follows them through homes, escapes and short-lived shelters. What is first mentioned about the film now is not its content. It was Adèle Haenel's first film and she was twelve during the shoot. In 2019 Haenel accused the director Christophe Ruggia of sexually abusing her between the ages of twelve and fifteen. In February 2025 a French court found Ruggia guilty of sexual assault on a minor and gave him a four-year sentence, two years suspended and two to be served under house arrest with an electronic bracelet. Ruggia denies the accusations and has appealed. Haenel had announced in 2023 that she was leaving cinema.
