What The Drummer Is About
Sid, the son of a Hong Kong mob boss, is sent up into the mountains of Taiwan for his own safety after enraging his father’s most dangerous rival. Bored and restless, he comes across a group of Zen drummers in the hills and joins them, at first on account of a face he likes, and then in earnest, because the discipline there asks for the body and the patience together. Kenneth Bi used a real ensemble, U-Theatre, for the drumming. Tony Leung Ka-fai plays the father and Jaycee Chan the son. It was the first Hong Kong and Taiwan co-production selected for competition at Sundance.
