The Egg and I

Bob is just back from the war and newly married. He springs it on his wife Betty: he is quitting his job in the city and moving them both to a run-down chicken farm in the country. Betty grew up in town; there is no electricity, the water comes from a well, the house is falling apart. She tries to hold the place together while dealing with inquisitive neighbours and an obstinate pig, while Bob makes plans for crops and livestock. Then the handsome woman who owns the neighbouring farm turns up and appears to want more from Bob than help with her property. Chester Erskine directs, with Claudette Colbert as Betty and Fred MacMurray as Bob. It is adapted from Betty MacDonald's bestselling book. The neighbours played by Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride went on to a film series of their own.
