What The Elephant and the Butterfly Is About
When the babysitter does not turn up, a single mother has to leave her five year old daughter with the girl’s estranged father for a long weekend. The man has been absent from his daughter’s life for a long time and the two of them hardly know each other. The film tells those few days as time two strangers spend in the same house. The child is forward for her age, and more often than not she is the one who knows how to talk. The account neither clears the father nor condemns him; it watches what happens. A closeness built out of small things slowly appears. How it will end stays open until the last of the film. Lina Doillon and Thomas Blanchard appear in Amélie van Elmbt’s ninety five minute Belgian film, completed in 2017.
