What The Emperor's New Clothes Is About
Napoleon is in exile on Saint Helena. He devises a plan: an ordinary seaman who looks exactly like him, Eugene Lenormand, will take his place on the island; Napoleon will slip into Paris, and at the right moment Lenormand will reveal himself and the emperor will have his throne back. The journey turns out harder than expected. The real disaster is that Lenormand enjoys being emperor far too much to give it up. Napoleon, waiting beside a melon stall in Paris, starts getting used to the life of an ordinary man. Alan Taylor directs, with Ian Holm playing both Napoleon and Lenormand, and Iben Hjejle in the cast. A hundred and seven minutes. It is adapted from Simon Leys's novel. Not a historical film so much as a question: what is a title worth without the man?
