After simultaneous nuclear attacks by East and West, almost nobody is left on earth. Following an older woman who was born before the war, eight young women in their twenties wander the emptied landscape of eastern Europe looking for food, supplies and other survivors. Eventually they come across an old man living alone. Jan Schmidt made the film from Pavel Juracek’s screenplay, and it is among the hardest works of the Czech New Wave: an account of how people who have lost the memory of civilisation come to treat violence as natural. It was shot in an abandoned village.
