What The Final Master Is About
In 1930s Tianjin a Wing Chun master who wants to open his own school has to follow the city's rule: he must defeat eight established schools. Unable to fight them himself, he trains a student, knowing that the arrangement will require sacrificing the young man in the end. Xu Haofeng films martial arts as a system of rules and interests rather than as spectacle: no wires, no flying, only short hard contact. He also co-wrote Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster. What passes between master and student turns, finally, into a question of debt.
