What The Finest Hours Is About
In February 1952 a winter storm off Massachusetts broke two tankers in half on the same night. The Disney film follows one of them, the SS Pendleton, where four Coast Guardsmen took a small rescue boat rated for twelve people and brought back more than thirty men. Chris Pine plays coxswain Bernie Webber and Casey Affleck plays Ray Sybert, the chief engineer keeping the wreck afloat. The stronger half of the film is the ship, not the rescue: men inside half a tanker improvising a way to steer it. Commercially it sank. Disney could not make the numbers work and wrote off a substantial loss. Releasing a winter storm film at the end of January did not help, and neither did a cast with no real box office pull. Who it is for: viewers who like quiet, old-fashioned heroism and care about seamanship detail. Who it is not for: anyone looking for character depth. The romance subplot is thin next to the rescue and takes up room it has not earned.
