What The Forbidden Christ Is About
Bruno Baldi, an Italian soldier just back from a prison camp in Russia, tries to find out who informed on his brother to the Nazis. When he reaches the village he finds that everyone is silent; the war is over but the reckoning is not, and nobody wants to reopen those days. He is after revenge, but the more he looks the more he sees that the matter is not confined to a single traitor. The film questions how guilt and forgiveness are shared out in post war Italy. The director was a writer and built this single film of his on the questions in his own texts. Raf Vallone and Alain Cuny appear in Curzio Malaparte’s ninety nine minute Italian film, completed in 1951.
