What The Furnace Is About
Western Australia in the eighteen nineties, during the gold rushes. A young Afghan cameleer falls in with a mysterious bushman on the run with gold bars that carry the Crown's mark. The point is to reach a hidden furnace that can melt the mark away. Roderick MacKay wrote and directed it. The background is real: the men who opened up the interior with camel trains from the middle of the nineteenth century were lumped together as Afghans, but they came from India, Persia and elsewhere, and were Muslim, Sikh and Hindu. Ahmed Malek, Baykali Ganambarr and David Wenham play it. It screened at Venice.
