What The Gallant Hours Is About
The film covers the five weeks from Admiral William Halsey being given command of naval operations in the South Pacific to the victory at Guadalcanal. Robert Montgomery’s last film is a war picture that contains not a single combat scene: it stays in the rooms where decisions are made and looks at what commanding actually involves. James Cagney plays Halsey and puts aside his familiar energy for something measured. The semi-documentary manner is underlined by a male chorus heard almost throughout, a choice that gives the film a ceremonial air and that some viewers have found laid on rather thickly. It opens with Halsey on the edge of retirement, looking back at the five weeks in 1942 when he was matched against the Japanese admiral Yamamoto.
