What The Gasoline Thieves Is About
Lalo is fourteen and wants enough money to buy Ana a present, so he attaches himself to the local fuel thieves. In Mexico the work is called huachicoleo: tapping pipelines and selling the petrol on the black market. What looks to a boy like a small way to earn quickly becomes something he cannot walk back out of. Edgar Nito's first feature neither romanticises the trade nor lectures about it, and keeps the camera at the boy's height. It won the best new narrative director award at Tribeca in 2019 and picked up four Ariel nominations in Mexico.
