The Ghost

Amr Arafa's 2007 Egyptian film follows a young man accused of murder while suffering from amnesia. On the run from the police he tries to find out both who he is and who the real killer is, with only a friend to help him. The film uses the memory loss as the engine of its suspense. With every new piece of information about his past the lead has to reassess the last one, and the viewer is held in the same position. Ahmed Ezz leads. The production carries the action scale of the Egyptian mainstream of the period; the chase sequences and the pace of the cutting suit the genre. The narrative leans too hard on coincidence in its final section. Who it's for: those who like Egyptian action thrillers. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a tightly built detective story; the resolution does not fully answer the setup.
