What The Great Fava Beans of China Is About
Sherif Arafa's 2004 Egyptian comedy centres on a young man from a family of smugglers who is entirely unsuited to the trade. Mohy is treated as a coward, cannot join the family business and moves in with his mother and stepfather, who then send him to China to represent Egypt in a cooking competition. A man regarded as useless even at home trying to cope in a country he does not know is where all the comedy comes from. Mohamed Henedi's humour rests less on broad gesture than on his character being continually misread. The film also makes material out of cultural difference and slips into easy stereotype at points. It was one of the most watched Egyptian comedies of the 2000s. Who it's for: viewers who like Arab popular comedy and fish-out-of-water stories. Who it's not for: anyone who finds humour built on cultural stereotype a problem.
