A married explorer returning to Hamburg becomes attached to a young Swedish woman who spends her summers in the city. She seems to be life itself, and she is carrying a tropical illness that is slowly killing her, leaving him caught between her and the wife he regards as the more heavenly of the two. Neither the date nor the name behind it can be set aside: this was made in 1944, in the Third Reich, by Veit Harlan, the director of Jud Süß. Rudolf Binding’s text was altered for propaganda purposes and the stock was Agfacolor, reserved for privileged productions. Goebbels praised the craft in his diary and was troubled by what he called its eroticism of death.
