What The Harder They Come Is About
Ivan comes from the country to Kingston looking for work. He cuts a record, the one the film is named after, and the producer Hilton pays him almost nothing for it. To live he starts dealing marijuana, ends up shooting at police, and becomes a hero in the street. His song is at the top of the charts while he is on the run. Jimmy Cliff both acts and sings. The character comes from a real outlaw of the 1940s known as Rhygin. The soundtrack was one of the main reasons reggae travelled beyond Jamaica, and the Jamaican English was subtitled even in English-speaking countries.
