Nat Love, who watched Rufus Buck murder his parents as a child, comes after him twenty years later when Buck is released. His gang starts by robbing Buck's associates, and it turns into open war in Redwood City. It is Jeymes Samuel's first feature. The cast is entirely Black and the characters are based on real cowboys, lawmen and outlaws of the nineteenth-century American West. Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz and Regina King star. The project was announced in July 2019 under the title The Notorious Nine. Jay-Z produced and contributed original music. Shooting began in September 2020 after pandemic delays. It premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on 6 October 2021 and reached Netflix on 3 November 2021. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 88 percent. Baz Luhrmann praised it, saying Samuel had taken the legacy of the American cowboy and flipped it into a grand entertainment. It won Best Picture from the African-American Film Critics Association along with prizes at the NAACP Image Awards and the Black Reel Awards. Who it is for: viewers who like style-forward Westerns and action built around music. Who it is not for: anyone wanting historical accuracy. The people were real and the story is invented, and the film does not hide it.
