What The Idiot Is About
Kurosawa took Dostoevsky's novel out of Russia and moved it to postwar Hokkaido. Kameda comes back broken from the war, a guileless man incapable of anything but kindness; he arrives in this snowbound city and falls into the middle of a knot between two women and a friend. His pity opens everyone's wounds, and jealousy, violence and ruin follow. One important note: the studio cut the film. Kurosawa's original version, over four hours long, is lost; what is watched today runs about two hours and forty minutes, and some connections are broken because of it.
