What The In(famous) Youssef Salem Is About
Youssef Salem is forty-five and has spent his writing life missing narrowly. He finally writes the novel that works, but it feeds on his own family: an Algerian-French household, large and conservative, and everyone in it will recognise themselves on the page. So he sets about keeping the book out of their hands. Baya Kasmi directed and Ramzy Bedia leads, with Melha Bedia as his sister. It is a comedy with a serious question underneath: where does a writer get the right to tell his family's story, and who does he damage by telling it?
