What The Justice of Bunny King Is About
Bunny King is a mother whose children are in state care. She washes windscreens at traffic lights for cash, because she cannot get them back until she has a home and she cannot have a home without money. When she promises her daughter a birthday, she decides to break the rules the system runs on, with her runaway niece Tonyah beside her. Gaysorn Thavat’s first feature treats poverty not as a flaw inside a person but as a machine that keeps producing new rules to fall foul of. Essie Davis plays a woman who loses even in the moments when she is plainly right.
